Sharon A. Strachan-Byroo, of Piscataway, New Jersey, passed away on Saturday, December 12th at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. She was 58.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica and raised in the parish of St. Catherine, Sharon immigrated to the United States in 1982. She resided in the Bronx before settling in Piscataway, New Jersey in the late 1990s.

She earned an AAS degree from Borough of Manhattan Community College, and later pursued a BA in Accounting at PACE university in New York. She began her career at Oppenheimer Company in NYC as an Accounting Clerk and later moved to a position in law enforcement as a New York State Corrections Officer. She served in several correctional facilities throughout the state before retiring from the Edgecombe Residential Treatment Facility in New York City.

Sharon was a member of the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA). She enjoyed traveling, gardening, dancing, Jazzercise, swimming and spending time with her family, friends, and her dog.

Sharon was preceded in death by her brother Paul Anthony Strachan. She is survived by her parents, Germaine and Florence Strachan, her daughter, Jody Byroo of Maryland, her son, Malik Strachan-Holland of Piscataway, her brother, Winston Strachan of New York; sisters, Donna Strachan of New Jersey and Venice Strachan Singh of New York, her loving granddaughters, Amira Funk and Adriana Byroo; niece Janel Strachan, nephews Germaine Strachan, Anthony Strachan-Butler, Gabriel Singh, Daniel Singh, sister-in-law, Marjorie Strachan brothers-in-law Cornel Singh and Melbourne Newell and her dog, Dolly.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 22nd from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton Street, Somerset, New Jersey. Funeral services will follow from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. Due to COVID restrictions, the services will be limited to family members only. She will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony the following day.

My heart is saddened to hear of the loss of my dear friend Sharon. I am without words to express her loss and my deepest sympathy to the family πŸ‘ͺ I am eternally thankful for the special occasions and hilarious moments we had in high school, they are unforgettable!

My sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the Strachan family. Words cannot express the sorrow I felt to learn of the passing of my childhood best friend Sharon. It was a joy to have known her and I will forever cherish the memories we shared for years to come.Praying that the family will find comfort knowing that she has made such an impact on so many people in her short life.
