Obituary

Paul Suruje Sirinathsingh was born on Sunday November 22, 1931 at Jairaghsingh Village, Sangre Grande in Trinidad and Tobago and passed away on Sunday, February 28th at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. He was 89.

Paul’s paternal grandfather migrated from India in 1875 and was followed by his brother Jairagh Singh in 1891. Paul’s father, Sirinath Singh, born in 1903 in Freeport, Trinidad was adopted by his paternal grand-uncle, Jairagh Singh who founded the Village named after him.

In 1924, Sirinath Singh married Bhagmania Sinanan and they had seven children, five boys and two girls. Paul was the second child and the eldest son. The Village is located in a picturesque setting on the slopes of the Central Range in Trinidad. Paul’s father was a successful cocoa farmer and Paul’s childhood centered around agriculture with fresh fruits always being available. He, as well as his siblings, were called upon to assist with the crops. As the eldest son, Paul was delegated tasks by his father and records indicate that he even registered the births of some of his siblings. Some of their birth certificates show the informant as “S. P. Sirinathsingh, School Boy”!

Paul’s elementary and secondary schooling was in the town of Sangre Grande. He became successful sales representative and during this time played an important role in getting his younger siblings to work and school. Paul was never one to shirk his responsibilities in this regard as well as in assisting his parents in whatever had to be done. His father came to rely on him to assist in any legal work which had to be done.

While he was a sales representative, Paul met the love of his life, Fay.

Paul married Hafeza “Fay” Ali on December 18, 1964 in Trinidad and Tobago and they had two children, Paula (1965) and Mark (1968). Paula, a graduate of Concordia University, Montreal, Canada is married to John Burk, President and Owner of Carteret Die Casting Corp.

In later years, Paul set up his own import and sales company. He joined the Lions Club of Trinidad and Tobago and became involved in social work. In the 1990’s, the family migrated to Jersey City, New Jersey and Paul then began the retirement phase of his life, enjoying time with his beloved wife and children.

Fay died on March 8, 2016 after 51 years of marriage. Paula and Mark survive them both.

Paul is survived by four of his six siblings: Kissoondath, Dalip and Joyce who all live in England and Krishna (Florida). All of them are now retired.

Cremation services have been held privately.

A Memorial Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 3rd at 11 AM at the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton Street, Somerset, New Jersey with a Blessing to follow at 11:30 AM.
