The Life Story of Mary Light Matthews

May Light was born in East Orange, New Jersey on June 11, 1927 and raised in Harlem, New York. She was a member of the New York Peace Mission growing up and graduated from The All Girls High School in Brooklyn. She worked as a Nanny for the Author, Richard Wright and a number of years for the General Services Administration. On December 31, 1963, she was united in holy matrimony to Thomas Rupert Matthews, Jr. After marrying, she and her husband, Thomas, moved to New Brunswick where they raised their two daughters, Maria Thomasina and Sylvia Charisse Bolade.

Mary was a devoted wife to Thomas and in the early years of their marriage, handled the administrative needs for his Scrap Metal business. Mary was a wonderful mother and when her daughters were young, would sew stylish matching outfits for them to wear in the summer months. She raised her daughters with Godly principles and instilled in them to carry themselves with dignity and grace. She was an avid reader of the bible and was known for reciting large portions of scriptures from memory. She loved to sing and have fun and loved the theatrical both professionally and personally. Three of her biggest accomplishments were her grandchildren Barry Calvin McCloud, Jr., Kiersten Marie McCloud and Kiara Mary McCloud.

Mary passed away on Friday, June 3, 2022 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Thomas and daughter Sylvia C.B. McCloud.

Mary leaves behind to celebrate her life, her daughter Maria Vaughan (Randy), her three grandchildren Barry, Jr., Kiersten and Kiara, her cousin Ruth Love (Falls Church, VA) and a host of family and friends that loved her dearly. A special heartfelt “thank you” to all the wonderful people who called or dropped off supplies, food, etc. in these last years of her life – it takes a village!
