Gil was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and continued his education at Long Island University.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean War. Gil and his wife, Ellin, were married in 1959 and raised their family in Brooklyn. They moved to Somerset, NJ in 1986, and became members of St. Matthias Church.
Gil worked in Manhattan for many years and then retired from Davidson Pipe Supply in Brooklyn. One of his greatest passions was jazz music. He was an avid fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Knicks, and the New York Giants, and was an active bowler throughout most of his life.
Gil was a cancer survivor and was introduced to Tai Chi at Crossroads4Hope, a cancer support group. He practiced Tai Chi there for over 20 years.
He was predeceased by his daughter Meg Ossandon, brother Elton Ossandon, and sister Peggy Tomko.
He is survived by his wife Ellin, and their daughters, Gail Jones and her husband David, Jane Ossandon-Schönfeld and her husband Matthias, and Carol and Detlef Höpfner. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Lucas Gilbert Höpfner, Tristan Schönfeld and Anya Höpfner
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday June 28, 2023 at 10 am at St. Matthias Church, 168 JFK Blvd. in Somerset. Interment and military honors will be held following mass at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veteran Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ.
