Daria Cergnul passed away on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family following a long illness. She was 91 years old. Born in Zara, Italia (now Zadar, Croatia) to Pietro & Giovanna Zupcich. Daria grew up during WWII in the city that came to be known as the Dresden of the Adriatic. The sights, sounds and sorrows of that time taught Daria the priceless value of family and friends, and to never take for granted the opportunity to share time, stories and great meals.

Daria moved to New York City where she met her husband, Giuseppe Cergnul. They settled in their home in New Brunswick, NJ where they raised their daughters, Sonia and Tania. Daria was an avid gardener with a very green thumb. Everything grew for her. In fact, the rosemary and lilies she and her mother had brought from their homeland all those years ago, are still thriving. Her garden was amazing! Vegetables, flowers and flowering trees. Daria was a voracious reader in English, Italian, Croatian, and Spanish. She spoke seven languages and could never understand how some people could get through life with just one! Daria had a very dynamic personality and loved to laugh. She was always ready for a joke. She loved to sew, make latch hook rugs, crochet and knit. Daria had a great love of music, especially opera. She knew every note and every word, and could tell you all their storylines and characters. But the one thing she enjoyed most in life was cooking. You could sit in her kitchen, carry on a conversation, all the while she had soup going, sauce bubbling, and homemade gnocchi standing by. You could never visit her home and leave hungry, or without a huge care package. She loved to travel. She ventured to New Zealand and Australia, most of Europe, drove to Canada and Mexico, as well as cross-country twice. Truly, a life fully and well-lived! Daria was a congregant of St Mary of Mt Virgin Church. She loved Saint Rita of Cascia, Our Lady and Saint Padre Pio, always crediting the power of prayer for her many “come backs” from the edge.

Daria was preceded in death by her loving husband, Giuseppe Cergnul; daughter, Tania Cergnul; brothers Elio Zupcich and Giorgio Zupcich.

Daria is survived by her daughter and caregiver, Sonia, and her husband, Dr. Marco Scotti and only grandchild, GianMarco Scotti; her brother, Nicolo Zupcich; Amore, her beloved cat; as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Daria’s family extends a public thank you to the staff of Compassus Hospice, especially her nurse, Erin, and aide, Shirley, who provided kind, gentle and loving care.

Relatives and friends may visit at the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton Street, Somerset, NJ on Monday, January 11, 2021 from 9:00—10:30 am.
