Mr. Bruce Medley passed away on Wednesday May 26, 2021 at St. Peter’s University Medical Center in New Brunswick. He was sixty three years of age.

Mr. Medley was born in East Orange. He lived there as a child and graduated from East Orange High School where he excelled at Basketball. He furthered his education at Morris County College and Ramapo College where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. He also received an Associate’s Degree in Substance Abuse Education.

While at Ramapo, Mr. Medley’s skills as a basketball athlete blossomed. He scored over one thousand points during his career there and over five hundred rebounds. His efforts gained him a Division III All American award and ultimately was inducted into the Ramapo Athletic Hall of Fame.

After graduating, he continued his basketball career for a brief time with the New Jersey Nets then played professionally in South America. He came back to the United States and took a position as Assistant Coach for the Ramapo Basketball program from 1994-1996.

Bruce began his career working as a Case Worker for Catholic Charities in Edison, Patterson and Bridgewater.

His love of coaching, mentoring and being a positive influence on youth lead to a shift in his career. He took a position in Franklin Township as Recreation Coordinator in 2002. The position he still held today.

Bruce also was an Event Staff Supervisor at Rutgers University where he was responsible for escorting and accompanying coaching staff and guests during athletic events. He gained a tremendous amount of respect from not only the Rutgers University Athletic Staff but from most opposing teams coaching staff and athletes due to how well he treated people.

My condolences go out to the family and friends of Bruce. I am lost for words because I cannot even start to tell you what he has meant to me and my daughter especially. Bruce was always a father to all kids and he loved all kids no matter what. Bruce always had a smile on his face he was the type of guy that everyone would wanna have in their lives. He will be surely be missed by all and my heart breaks for his family and especially for his children because I know he loved his boys and his daughter. I say to the family to stay strong and know that your father has made an impact on so many lives and he has touched so many people and made them better people than maybe what they were.❤️🙏🏽🙌🏽💜

Bruce & I met over 20yrs ago when we worked at Catholic Charities Men's Shelter. He was a RA and I was the Administrator Asst. He was the BEST DRESSED MAN (besides my daddy) I have EVER known. He was sweet, hard working, respectful and so much more. He always had a smile on his face no matter what craziness was going on at work. He handled himself as a strong man and made sure the men staying at the shelter did as such. When it snowed he helped dig me out and always made sure I made it home safely with my 2 young children then. Going to the Rutgers games (football & basketball) I always looked for him to see that smile. He would see me and wave. He would give me a big hug and ask if my family was well. He was thoughtful like that. Loosing such a wonderful person is a hard pill to swallow, but he now sits on the right hand of the father. I WILL see him again...we all will.
Jenn & Medley family I am soooo sorry for your loss. I will keep everyone in my thoughts and prayers.
Rest well big bro!! You are sorely missed!!

My sincere condolences to the Medley Family. I can remember many days walking to EOHS with him along with other classmates. It was always much laughter and so much fun. He was always so very pleasant. Always a smile on his face. He will be forever missed. May he rest in peace and his memory be a blessing to everyone he touched.

I met Bruce at a Cancer Survivors celebration at the Pines Manor. He was outgoing, friendly and full of fun. I knew his girlfriend , Jenn, but that was the first time I met him. I didn't realize he was a patient, I thought he was a guest speaker. Turned out he was both. When Bruce spoke everyone listened. His words inspired everyone ,he spoke about his first diagnosis , not being able to find shoes to fit his swollen feet, so he wore flip flops, He faced his disease with grace and dignity. He gave everyone the idea they could survive, you just had to work hard at it .He taught me you could have cancer and still lead a normal life, you could laugh, travel and live your life to the fullest no mater how long you had left. I didn't see Bruce often but always looked forward to chatting with him He gave me strength when I had none. After every talk with Bruce, I felt more hopeful, and looked to the future. Bruce will be missed by many in the sports world, many in the business world, of course ,his family and friends, and as a mentor and a ray of hope for the cancer survivors. . Thank you for all you did for all the others, now take the time to rest for yourself, your work on earth is done, rest in peace my friend. I will miss you.
